Submission rules

*PLEASE READ CAREFULLY*

We have finally had the chance to sit down and revise the rules!

This is the outcome:
______________________________________________
- Canon images ONLY. Use EXIF to prove it! If you do not have EXIF or any metadata to prove it, we would appreciate you adding your camera details in the pictures description.

- No heavy editing on the pictures. That means:

-> No unreal colors (black and white is acceptable)
-> No off toning (unless it comes with film used) e.g.
- sepia
- cross-processing
- "vintage look"
- cream toning for b/w
-> No selective toning
-> No heavy vignetting
-> No TEXT in the images (that does not include your signatures/watermarks)
-> No added textures
-> No collages/diptychs/triptychs
-> No HDR with halo (yes to subtle HDR!)

- You have to be the rightful owner of the submission.
- Max. one submission per week.
- We also accept good kinematic art, if it's done by using Canon gear.

______________________________________________
We will decline pictures that don't comply to the rules, if we have told you once, don't make us say it again.
We get a huge amount of pictures coming in daily, so have patience, if the picture should expire, it will be dealt with.
It's okay to ask for critique and feedback as long as your picture is compliant with the rules. If not, you will not be answered.
______________________________________________

HDR?

We also want to accent that from now on we accept SOME HDR images, that means, if the picture looks good and benefits from the colour blending, then in some cases we might accept your work.

QUESTIONS?

If you have questions that don't have anything to do with your submission, please send them directly into our inbox, we ask you to NOT post questions on the front page as comments, cause that might go unnoticed and not get an answer.

WHY WE DECLINED YOUR WORK?

Our standards are not too high, but yes, they are not low either.
these might be some examples why we have denied your work:
- The quality isn't good enough. Yes, if you have very shaky hands, use a tripod, if you don't have one, be creative and build one, or use something to stance yourself with.
If the quality of the image is really severely damaging the overall look of the picture, than it's more than enough of a reason for us to decline it.
- The picture is not compliant with the rules. As you see we have revised some rules, and we're not that harsh anymore, but we still did manage to leave some submission criteria in, so please, PLEASE go through the rules before you submit anything. IT WILL HELP US ALL in the long run.
- The picture just isn't good enough. YES, we know you love your dog, and that sunset looks SO good sitting on the hilltop with the loved one, but don't forget WE DON'T KNOW THE STORY BEHIND THE PICTURE. Might just be it's not good at all if we're not able to feel the same things you felt.

*PLEASE*

In the end, we want to be a group that showcases good work done by using canon gear, we don't want to flood peoples message boxes, but if your picture is good enough, we see no reason to not accept it.

GOOD LUCK, and thank you for reading. All our love
- Canon Club Crew

Hey all,

I've been seeing a lot of anger recently in regards to the rejection of images. Before I go into why, I'd like to point out that our submission guidelines state the following:

"In the end, we want to be a group that showcases good work done by using canon gear, we don't want to flood peoples message boxes, but if your picture is good enough, we see no reason to not accept it."

We do this for fun, we get quite a number of submissions each day. We all have jobs and make the best out of our days. I'm sorry I cannot always state why your submission is rejected, but I will want to give everyone here a few pointers:

- Please do not submit pictures with excessive toning, it still happens, and people still wonder why it gets rejected. A fair amount of times I found people forgot to set up the color profile in photoshop, resulting in images that appear bland or contrast-less. For more reading on this:  [link] / [link] (PDF)

- I noticed a lot of pictures that have no actual subject (or foreground). Yes its a pretty waterfall, yes its a pretty tree, but a lot of pictures lack the actual subject, there is no foreground in there, just the background. To me this disqualifies as a pretty picture as it doesn't follow basic composition guidelines (and the mods agree). If you have been wondering why your awesome picture got declined, that would probably be it.

- Unsharp, yes, believe it or not but about 20% of the submissions is actually not sharp. There is no way to fix this in photoshop without making a big mess. The best way to handle this is to either increase the shutterspeed, up the ISO, lower the f/ number or get a tripod :). I think it goes without further saying that unsharp pictures automaticly dont qualify.

Last but not least: boring pictures. This is always a personal matter and people have been getting really upset over this. Don't take it personal! I'm judging your picture here for a group on dA (= internet). My opinion should only matter a little, don't let it ruin your day. Taking it out on our public page or our moderators will only get you removed. The only thing we would like for you is to go out and make a even better crisp picture, with a subject, with real colors and with awesome light!

Oh one more thing! If you have 5 or more accepted submissions, we would like to invite you for moderatorship! As said above we are busy people and we could use a new moderator with a fresh look on things! Please note ~Hyperized with a motivation and we will get you up to speed :)

Thank you for your time :)

If we find a photo to be powerful and well done, there's no need to thank us for accepting it ;)

If you want to thank us for declining this, here's why:
1. It's not a very imaginative photo of something a lot of us have seen before. We're looking for outstanding images, for imaginative approaches to photography and excellent craftsmanship/artistry in the use of Canon equipment. Why this position, shot from eye's height? Why not kneel down and shoot? Why not shoot from the ground up?
2. Awkward looking position of his left hand, a viewer's eyes jump to it and somehow constantly return to it. That's something you can only see in the image once it's shot, and it's extremely difficult to shoot good photos just "in a snap". That's why we don't all take iconic photographs, and often if we do, it's because we've been lucky, skilled and persistent at the same time.
3. Lots of pretty heavy and uninspired Unsharpen Mask around the dancer (goes against our "no heavy editing submission rule).

Before you give us this passive-aggressive type of answer next time, please make sure you read our submission rules, or simply ask for feedback on why your image was declined.

Most of all: Keep up your photography, practice, enjoy!

Cheers,
Thomas

It was irony. I would not write this if I had not check before the gallery of accepted works, some of these approved has raised in me a smile of irony. I'm not saying that this photo was unusual, but on the background of many adopted into your gallery is amazing. Thank you, that you replied to me, it's not often happens. I think you should be more consistent in the observance of own rules. I will not bother you anymore because I have resigned from membership in the group. Cheers!

I think the difference between irony and sarcasm is an important one, and this here certainly was latter rather than the former. Apart from that, I'm inviting you to browse the gallery and note me with any photo from the gallery you find to be inferior to your street dancer shot, and I'll be happy to discuss this with you.
Cheers,
Thomas

As we all have busy lives even having four moderators can sometimes be not enough. We're sorry for delays, but sometimes they're inevitable. Also I think it doesn't really matter whether this time passes to lead to a decline or an acceptance, we're considering every and all photos submitted to the group, and especially with a tie between moderators we have to wait for a third opinion, which again leaves us at the stage of saying "sorry, we've been busy, but we do our best".

How you benefit from your camera doesn't have a lot to do with its resolution ("megapixel count") but rather with what you do with it. So: What are you interested in? What do you want to captur in photos? It often helps not to think of wanting to make "beautiful photos" (unless that's your only goal), but rather of what you want them to show, what emotions you want to convey. So again: What do you want to photograph? If you know that, it's often mostly about going and actually photographing, looking for views, angles, lines, textures, "stories" in the pictures, connections...

Uh... which one? :D If you see that it expired we'd ask you to comment in the submission form as it's a bit difficult to sift through hundreds of photos looking for the one by you!
